Character Traits

We’ve been spending a lot of time with family and friends these past several weekends, and while that has been a lot of fun, it’s also introduced us to some welcome and unwelcome behaviors. Some of these have been observed in others, some observed and experimented with by the boys, others observed and fully participated in and seem to have ‘stuck’.

With Cutie Pie going to prekindergarten in the fall, I’m even more aware of these types of things, because I’ve already been wondering if he’ll pick up ‘bad habits’ from others, bring them home and teach them to Sweet Pea. I know it’s a normal thing to expect, and totally normal to worry about, however, I just don’t want to yet!

Hubby and I are thinking of doing some little character trait lessons with the boys in anticipation of the fall start to pre-K. I’m already familiar with Hubbard’s Cupboard’s lessons and am going to check out some others if I get the time to search a little more. Miss N’s sharing this summer has been a good start for us in this regard. We also hope to hit on respect, integrity, honesty, love, and of course more after we work through these. We won’t be spending a whole week on any one, rather finding ways to be even more intentional in impressing these character traits in our boys’ everyday lives.

It always surprises me when I stop and observe my children in new circumstances or with new friends and I see them handle themselves so well, or even display behaviors I never thought I’d see. Seems like I’m seeing a lot of things in a new light lately.

Every post needs a picture or two, right? Here are a couple of the boys with their new friend, the son of my neighbor growing up! It’s hard to imagine any of them disobeying their parents isn’t it?

Colton definitely picked up some bad habits from a certain little boy in his preschool class. He learned to spit and to run around “shooting” people. We have tried to ignore the behavior, but it doesn’t seem to be helping much.

It’s hard for me just to sit back and watch. I want to get right in there and help my kids interact with other kids. They have a hard time with socializing.
