Galapagos Pretend Play

Nana and Papa just got back from 10 days on a National Geographic ship adventure to the Galapagos Islands. Every day they were gone Cutie Pie, Sweet Pea and I spent time on the computer checking out where they were that day, any updated status from their ship (the ship had daily updates with pictures and/or video which included footage of passengers on actual treks on the islands) and looking up animals from the Galapagos.

It is truly amazing the species of animals that live no where else other than on those islands. The internet offered us such an education about these animals, and the photos and videos we were treated to when Nana and Papa returned made us want to visit there too! (Unfortunately, we probably never will – what a price tag related to that!) The colors and uniqueness of the animals made so many of them seem almost make believe. Nana and Papa said seeing them in person seemed almost like a dream – everywhere they went they had to watch where they stepped as there were so many iguanas and crab. They went snorkeling with sea lions swimming right up to them. They have photos of blue footed boobies that were within 7 feet of them and who didn’t fly away. The pictures were amazing and I’m sure the experience was even more-so!
Cutie Pie was playing all the while and occasionally looking at the slides while we watched Nana and Papa’s slide show of about 1/3 of the photos they took. Occasionally he would look up say the name of the animal in the slide. He was sitting on his daddy’s lap while watching the videos, but was very quiet and very tired. We knew he found it all interesting based on the few comments he made about an animal they mentioned while telling us about their trip over dinner, but especially because of what he talked about daily when seeing everything on the computer.
The morning after seeing the slide show and video Cutie Pie was playing around on our sofa and he started to climb up on it then lie down and close his eyes. We couldn’t figure out for the longest time what he was doing. Then he started to tell the story while he did it. Turns out he was being a sea lion climbing up a ledge, finding a crook in it, lying down and going to sleep. Evidently he was listening more intently than we realized to the slideshow. Nana and Papa had a slide of a sea lion in a precarious position on the side of a cliff and were saying they had no idea how he got there, but it made for a great photo. This was Cutie Pie’s imitation of what he thought happened!
