I’ve been very sidetracked since Friday morning. Haven’t been able to concentrate on anything. Almost Actually sick to my stomach. See, there was a major flood in my home town. It affected me greatly because my mom’s home was right in the middle of it.
I was glued to Facebook, because, quite frankly, that’s where all the information about the flood was posted. Unfortunately, even some affected by the flood did not have access to this information because local news tended to be spotty. I found myself relaying information from here (2 hours away) that was more up to date than what my mom received via TV news and newspaper.
My mom has been through a lot in her life. A divorce. Death of two spouses. Breast cancer. She doesn’t have a lot, other than a huge heart. She didn’t deserve to have days taken away from her life wondering if her belongings were under sludge and water. If her life would change forever. Yet again.
My mom is a giver. In fact, when I talked with her while she was waiting to be allowed to check on her home after the water level went down, she said she was hoping her clothing was fine so she could donate items to those in need. She’s a giver. Big time.
However, tonight I’m thanking God. Mom was able to return to her apartment to check on it earlier tonight and the water came within only inches from entering her first floor apartment. Her apartment was completely dry, even though the basement was completely flooded and her car is inoperable.
So incredible after seeing the pictures of the park behind her home on Facebook. Seeing the lake of water gently lapping against the road by a building on higher ground just down from her home.
I’d like to share photos later this week, as well as links to resources should an evacuation such as this affect you or a loved one in the future.
Be thankful.
