Thank you Firefighters

In light of the recent tragedy in my town I’ve been watching a brotherly-community spirit amongst some amazing men and women as portrayed by status updates on Facebook and stories on the news.

Status updates were flowing in this weekend from the Prayers and Support of Webster Firefighters face book page of boot collection totals from neighboring communities (to go to families of the lost firefighters), reports of thruway rest stations filled with firemen in their dress uniforms on their way to calling hours for the fallen, of more in their dress uniforms aiding a motorist whose car slid off the road in this snowy weather…

A picture today of perhaps thousands of men and women in their fireman dress uniforms standing in line outside the high school, where calling hours are being held, while the snow is coming down, the fire truck ladders raised with a draped flag visible at the entry of the school.

Our local community has stepped up as well. Many, many hotel rooms have been paid for and have been reserved for visiting firemen and families of the deceased. All sorts of other donations being made in honor of the victims to comfort those who grieve for them. I know this is a much appreciated act of kindness as so many have traveled miles to pay their respects for their fallen brothers.

I know I’m a bit sappy, and maybe having to pull over in our car to let the processional go by the other day hit a nerve, but I have to say Thank You to all those who serve our communities as firemen and women as well as all others who act to keep me safe in my community. I’ve always thought of you as brave, willing to go so far beyond for my safety and the safety of others, even willing to face countless unknown conditions when responding to a fire. It just so saddens me that one of those unknowns is a death not related directly to a fire.

God bless you, all who keep us safe, as you put yourselves in harms way to protect us. Such a high calling that I could never repay. And many blessings, many, many prayers being lifted for those who have lost someone so willing to protect me.
