Instrument Petting Zoo – trombone

Hubby is a music teacher, so in college he had to learn to play all the instruments. There are a few instruments that have become part of our instrument ‘collection’ that usually stay safely hidden away under piles of stuff in various closets. One of them is the trombone. Yes, he is a string music teacher, and no, I have no idea why this particular instrument came into our home other than that we saw it on sale for $25 at an antique store even though it is not an antique!

For some reason Cutie Pie was asking to play one of Hubby’s instruments. Hubby decided to pull out an instrument that the boys hadn’t seen up close before and out came the trombone. Both boys found it so funny to see their daddy playing the trombone, with it’s slide, horn and ability to ‘grow’. Sweet Pea especially liked it when Hubby would slide it into the lowest notes. Each boy had a turn trying to play a note after Hubby tried to teach them the correct way to blow into it. It was quite fun! Cutie Pie had a harder time than Sweet Pea getting a sound to come out, but we realized Cutie Pie would only blow into it with his tongue between his lips (you are supposed to make a buzzing motion with your lips and keep your tongue safely in your mouth!)

I think the Instrument Petting Zoo will be happening again in our home with some of our other instruments as this was quite a highlight for the boys! It was also sort of neat that it coincided with the beginning of our week learning the letter H (because, after all, a trombone is a Horn!) Unfortunately, this didn’t get posted during that week, but that’s another story…
