Wash those hands!

How many times a day do you wash your hands? How many times a day do your kids? I don’t know about you but my kids love to wash their hands, er, well, play in the sink, that is. I guess every child is like that and every mom is probably after their kids to wash their hands well, especially this time of year with all the colds and other sickness traveling around.

This past week we went to one of our favorite places and suddenly Sweet Pea wanted to wash his hands when we visited the restroom rather than just run out the door like usual. I don’t know if it’s a ‘turned 2 and we’re calling him a big boy’ thing or what, but I’m not minding this sudden infatuation with cleanliness. I snapped this pic of him trying to figure out how the soap dispenser works. Bathrooms are not usually a place where I have my camera ready, but since this was a family bathroom and Hubby was taking care of Cutie Pie I managed to get it out in time. I also wasn’t in as much of a hurry as I usually am in a public restroom because I have seen these bathrooms cleaned so frequently that sometimes I wonder if I’m supposed to tip the bathroom attendant!

Sweet Pea spent some time figuring out how the faucets worked, too, and then we sang our ABCs while he scrubbed and then again while he rinsed, with my assistance. I was pretty impressed that this worked! I know you’re supposed to sing it twice while you scrub, or something like that, but with a play wonderland on the other side of the door and a 4 year old dying to walk out and explore it, not to mention the attention span of a 2 year old even though he was ‘playing’ in water with his hands, I was happy! Now on to maintaining this interest in washing hands in public restrooms…..

If you don't want to touch the door handle when exiting a public restroom, look for a foot operated door opener like StepNpull. StepNpull gives you the option of pulling the door open with your foot instead of touching the door handle.

Thanks for the tip! We always use the paper towel to open the door!

My kids love washing their hands, too, only not when they are actually meant to, like before food or after going to the toilet. My son used to have tantrums crying 'I want my germs, I want my germs'.
