Every child should have a cardboard house at least once in their childhood! Our neighbor recently gave this refrigerator box and the kiddos put it to good use! Of course, their Daddy and I helped, and we all had great fun!
I cut windows and a door and provided ‘paint’ (lightly colored water with food coloring and sometimes chalk paint – we figured this box wasn’t going to be around long, so it was ok to get it wet) and markers and crayons.
Daddy lent a hand with the furnishings – he drew the oven and cabinets in the kitchen,
The painting part was pretty interesting. I thought I was just getting them to use their hands and imaginations a bit, asking what color they were going to paint the house – the kitchen, living room and outside of it. They did a great job with that, as you can see in these photos, even painting the ceiling! But then Cutie Pie started mixing the colors…and it turned into an art class! We talked, once again, about how colors make other colors when they are combined. And, once again, all colors were combined and we ended up with a very icky color!
We still have the cardboard box house. Surprisingly it hasn’t been destroyed, although it is in much worse condition! I often hear the request to pull it out into the driveway, which is followed by the request for the paint, paintbrushes and crayons. It’s so much fun to see their minds work!
This is how we’ve been playing lately. How about you? If you’d like to see what others are up to check out We Play Tuesdays at Childhood 101!

What great fun! I don't remember ever having a cardboard box house, and now I am feeling deprived LOL
How fun! My family moved all the time growing up, and the big bonus of moving to a new place was getting to play with all the cardboard boxes!
Always be sure to wear protective work gloves when you are drawing furniture on the inside of a box with a crayon.
we had a washing machine box this week too and they kids just love it
I love this! My dad used to make me everything out of cardboard from suits of armor, forts (like your hubby), swords, helmet, etc etc. I try to do the same for my two boys (21 mos apart). Thanx for sharing – brent
I love your living room complete with family picture, this takes box cubbies to a whole new level of sophistication! LOL
Looks and sounds like they have had hours of fun.
