I know the past few days of posts haven’t been directly about kids, however, I think many of us struggle with the issues I’ve been talking about. Don’t worry, today is the last day this week I will talk about finding who we truly are. I may touch on it here and there in the future again!
Many read Proverbs 31 and think this woman is incredible, someone to admire, to emulate and strive to be like, but an ideal. A list of characteristics wanting to be seen in every woman, but yet unattainable for all.
I have been reading a bit about what others think about this mystery woman in response to all of my Who am I Questions (read here and here) and came across the blog The Fulltime Girl. As I read her words about the Proverbs 31 woman I realized her thoughts were exactly what I had been surmizing all along but had never put into words. This Proverbs 31 woman was living for God. Her identity wasn’t rolled up in what others thought of her, what she thought of herself, what good deeds she had done, or her achievements…Her purpose, her sense of being was coming from her heart, which belonged to God.
Her perfection is not her own, it belongs to the One who owns her soul. The only reason why the Proverbs 31 Woman can be perceived as “perfect” is because she is a product of the God who lives within her. The only thing that’s perfect about her, is Him. – The Fulltime Girl
I am not suggesting that if we center our hearts on God that we will be happy or be able to become the Proverbs 31 woman, but that she is included in the Bible to be an example. In real life we often look for mentors. Even when we don’t actively interact with them, often there is that one person we as women want to be like, to hopefully be modeling our lives after. That woman doesn’t need to be someone we could reach out and touch. It could as easily be the woman drawn as an example for us in Proverbs 31. Her personality will not change. She cannot falter, as she is already written. Her heart not only reflected God then, but continues to reflect God for us to see so clearly now. She is a living example as the Bible’s words continue to live in us.
I take comfort in once again reminding myself that the Proverbs 31 woman is not an ideal for me to put on a pedestal and worship, but rather is an example of how God might use me to reflect others to Him if I truly give my heart to Him every moment.
I will never be able to answer the question “Who am I?” with “I’m the same as the Proverbs 31 woman.” But I will be able to answer that I am a daughter of God, with Him living within me, and that I am someone who greatly admires the Proverbs 31 woman as a mentor!
So, who do you admire?
