Cutie Pie was in what I called Dinosaur Camp for a week in August. Rochester Museum and Science Center called it Prehistoric Perils mini-camp. One of the crafts he brought home were dinosaur scales.
Sweet Pea was so enamored with them that we made some for him. They are super easy, so I thought I’d share since I am seeing a lot of dinosaur things on blogs lately.
It’s super easy. All you need are some paper plates, crayons/markers/paints to decorate, yarn, scissors, stapler, maybe some tape.
First you decorate one side of at least 3 plates, more if your child is really tall.
Then you measure out your yarn. Make sure there is enough to go the length of all of the plates as well as to make 2 loops which your child’s arms will fit through. The loops rest on the child’s shoulders and this is what holds the scales onto their bodies. (sort of like a backpack)
Make the 2 loops with the yarn and knot into place, forming a Y with the string, with the shorter ends being loops.
Next you fold the plates in half and lay the long piece of yarn in the crease, making sure not to put the loops into a plate on accident. Staple the yarn in the fold. This is what holds the yarn in place. Then staple the rest of the plate just enough that it stays folded. You may want to place tape over the staples.
Place the child’s arms through the loops, resting them on the child’s shoulders like a backpack and there you have the dinosaur scales! Send your dino running and roaring!
