Pouring

Check out Childhood 101 for other We Play ideas!
Well, today I did something I never imagined myself doing…I let my boys play with water INSIDE! That’s such a stretch for me even though I don’t mind lots of other messy things. Yesterday I mentioned to Cutie Pie, my 3 yr old, that I found this great plastic pitcher and that he could use it to practice pouring next time Sweet Pea was napping. Unfortunately, he thought it would be a great idea to try it not just while Sweet Pea was awake, but wanted Sweet Pea to try it too! I don’t know what came over me, but I said yes!

Cutie Pie did a great job pouring (they each only had about 1/2 cup of water). He was so careful making sure all the water went nice and neatly into the cups and poured it so carefully back into the pitcher. He did that several times without spilling even a drop…that is, until he saw Sweet Pea pour it (accidentally, can you see him leaning over and spilling all the water? I can’t believe I clicked just as it happened!) all over the kitchen floor. It was as if someone flipped a switch and all of his coordination disappeared. I tried really hard to be lighthearted about it and laugh and giggle with them, but in reality I confess I was thinking “I don’t want to mop today!” But the kiddos had so much fun, I honestly think I might do it again (but would take the time to put lots of towels down!)

The days when Princess offers to pour her own milk or juice are the days I run into the kitchen, but I guess it would be a good idea to start off smaller like this to allow them/her to build up the confidence to actually be able to do it (both their confidence and ours!).
