These two things just have been on my mind and I have just got to get them out!
I was out Christmas shopping with my littlest and we passed a man and his (possible) daughter who looked to be about 3 or 4. The adorable little girl was sitting in shopping cart seat simply looking around like this was the normal thing to do in a store while the clean-cut gentleman pushing it, who appeared to be in his 30’s, was rocking out to music on his headphones without any interaction with her. They were near us for several minutes and it didn’t seem like he even looked at her during that time.
My family and I were at the children’s museum of play this past week. So many parents were texting and talking on their cell phones and simply following their children around (which seemed like it would be difficult to follow the right child in some cases – it was so crowded the day we were there and seems like no one looks up when they text!) There were so few parents interacting with their kids, or even talking with them, that I felt like we were in the vast minority actually playing with or being with our children.
This isn’t a blog post to accuse or judge anyone, rather, to try to pose the hypothetical questions “What do our children think of us and our public behavior towards them?” What is going on in childrens’ little minds when their parents are present, but distracted to such a great degree?
I’m also not trying to say this is typical behavior or even routine behavior of anyone in particular, or to make you feel guilty about doing work or attending to important calls. This is just what I saw in these particular instances and the thoughts that keep running through my mind as a result.
Thanks for listening.
