Family Vacation Day #2b

OK. On Friday I shared pictures from our morning in Niagara, NY. Here is a bit about our experience at Niagara Falls! (Just an FYI: I am not advertising for either Niagara Aquarium or Niagara Falls, rather relaying our experiences and what we liked about them. I am in no way being paid for my opinions or receiving anything in return for positive comments.)

When I was a little girl my family went to Niagara Falls (the American side) several times. My memories of each visit were different. It was almost like The Falls changed a little from visit to visit, but I don’t really know if that were possible. I know at different times throughout the history of the falls work has been done on them to change the water flow so that it can be used to make energy for at least some of this northeastern area of The United States.

Anywho…my kiddos, my hubby and I were just looking for something else fun to do after The Aquarium of Niagara, and we came across a sign for Niagara Falls State Park. We didn’t realize just how close we were to The Falls, even though we could see all the mist, because it seems that you can see the mist from The Falls from quite a distance. At first we were a little reluctant – imagining at least one child falling over the cliff into the water far below, but then we calmed ourselves as we thought about all of the families who have made this trek before us and how little you hear of accidental deaths with this cause so we headed in. I must say, for a NY State park this was just gorgeous! The grounds were so very neat, plenty of parking and beautiful!

If you don’t already know, there are two sides to The Falls, an American and a Canadian side. From the overlook in the middle you can see an overlook that actually hangs out over the river for a better view of The Falls (below). Before we walked there we took a look down and saw a path we could take if we were adventurous (which we thought a little too risky and slippery with 2 little ones!)

Cutie Pie checking out the Falls on the American side. In the distance you can see the overlook we walked to (in the drizzling rain!)

The look directly down from where we were standing (in the pic above)…those little yellow dots are people in yellow rain ponchos getting a closer look at the smaller rapids on the river. LOTS of wet steps down to get there…and then back up!

Here Cutie Pie and I are on the overlook. Just by my head is the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. To the left of Cutie Pie is the American side.

I couldn’t leave Hubby and Sweet Pea out! I was very surprised the kiddos weren’t nervous being out over a river like this. I was! I didn’t dare lean over the overlook to get a picture of the paths below us! From all of the overlooks you could see the Maid of the Mist boats, which go up to the base of The Falls, that’s what the little smudge like dots are below the Canadian Falls in the pic below.

Sweet Pea got awfully tired. He missed his nap in his crib and fell asleep on my shoulders after walking a very long way!

More American and Canadian Niagara Falls! The mist rising is so cool!

Amazing Sweet Pea could sleep – the sound of The Falls is intense and VERY loud! Isn’t the mist rising in front of the buildings very cool?

The last view of The Falls. Breathtaking when you are there – pics don’t do it justice!
This turned out to be a wonderful day trip! The kiddos were great – well behaved and listened to all we said. They even slept on the way home! We were a little surprised at the amount of stairs we encountered. We made good use of them, though, as we did a lot of counting! We also counted the Maid of the Mist boats we saw, which was a bit more challenging as sometimes there were a few minutes in between sightings. We talked about colors with Sweet Pea – it seemed that several places offered ponchos to those who might get close to The Falls and the ponchos varied in color depending on which adventure you paid for. This and all the talk about the fish earlier in the day at The Niagara Aquarium probably was a bit much for the kiddos, but they seemed to love it!
There are many more things to do in the Niagara Falls area, both on the American and Canadian sides to make a trip there a real vacation. We are just lucky enough to live within driving distance to make day trips there and are looking forward to exploring the area more another day!
