Magnet experiment

Sweet Pea surprised us today by reaching the Tot Lok magnet that was on the rim by the kitchen sink. He’s been watching his big brother pull a chair over to the counter and stand on it to help Daddy when they cook and finally figured out he could do it to reach things he wants, much to our dismay. Once he had the magnet in his hand we watched him go from one thing to another throughout our home seeing if the magnet would stick to it.

He was very methodical – trying the countertop, the cupboards, the cupboard handles, the refrigerator, the dishwasher, then opening the cupboards finding the metal picnic utensil carrier, the paper cups and plates, then on to the rumpus room – each time carefully holding the magnet to the object and turning around to give us a great big smile if it did!

We joked with Cutie Pie that Sweet Pea had a hypothesis about the magnet and was testing it. Cutie Pie has been learning about hypotheses when watching the Dinosaur Train show on PBS. They talk about having an idea about something and testing it, and Cutie Pie could readily relate while watching Sweet Pea. It was quite entertaining seeing him learn by trying!
