Visit with Family

Every once in a great while we venture to my hometown, about 2 hours away. Saturday morning we all hopped in the car and started the drive and got there in time for lunch after doing a few errands on the way. The kiddos always love seeing the Gramma and their Grandpa and this weekend was just the same.

There is a park behind Gramma’s house and the weather was nice enough for us to enjoy it. We also walked all the way around it and saw the big construction equipment that is housed on the other side, much to Cutie Pie and Sweet Pea’s delight! Gramma also has a lot of toys that are different than what the boys get to play with here at home, one of which is a little zoo house whose different colored doors you have to open with the correct color key. Hubby and I were totally surprised when Sweet Pea laid down on the floor and started opening the doors! We had never thought before of seeing if he could match colors…we match shapes and talk about colors, but this was just something we hadn’t done before! Anyway, he successfully opened every door with the correct key, took out the animal and the shape, closed the doors (using the keys) and proceeded to put the animal and the shape back in correctly with just a little help from us! Gramma is a laugher, and my kiddos absolutely love to laugh with her!

Grandpa’s house is up in the country with lots of room outside to wander and play. It’s like an adventure-land for the boys…Grandpa and his neighbor are always working on “the land” clearing and cutting down trees here, fixing a stone fence there. This weekend there were big chunks of trees waiting for the wood splitter, all standing on end looking like a checkerboard with round spaces instead of square. Cutie Pie entertained himself digging in a pile of dirt nearby while Hubby and Sweet Pea walked from log to log and back again. They also ran up and down a rather steep hill over and over and over again giggling like anything! Grandpa is a big kid at heart and a hard worker, which my boys experience and see when they are with him. I wish I had pictures to share, but, totally unlike us, we left the camera at home on accident.

I’ve said before how I so love the fact that my children love their grandparents and get to spend time with them. I grew up knowing only my grandmothers well, and only one grandfather – and him just for a few short years. The relationships I had with my grandmothers and the memories I have of their character are so near and dear to my heart…I wish my kids could know them…which makes me want my children to have strong relationships with their grandparents, no matter how far away they live.
