What’s the train car carrying?

Cutie Pie began the day pretending to be a train and running around the ‘loop’ in our house. This soon evolved into a game he was playing with Sweet Pea, which I loved (er, both the game and the fact that he made it up for Sweet Pea!) This is a short description of the game as it happened:

“I’m a train car carrying (insert the name of an animal here, such as chickens, cows, turkeys, etc.)” said Cutie Pie as he ran full tilt around the loop. The next time he passed Sweet Pea as he was sitting at the table finishing breakfast, CP asked SP what noise he should make.

“B-Gawk!” said Sweet Pea after CP passed as a chicken car. Cutie Pie then ran by making the chicken sound.

This went on for several trips around the loop, with different animals each time. Suddenly Cutie Pie came by Sweet Pea making a sound and Sweet Pea sort of knew that on his next trip around Cutie Pie would want to hear the name of the animal. Sure enough, Sweet Pea calls out “Chicken” and then “Cow” and then “Cat”, all correct names for the noises presented to him!

Needless to say I was pretty impressed with my 3 1/2 yr old and almost 2 yr old! Not only were they involved in pretend play, but creating a game, associating animal names with their sounds and vice versa! It was a great start to the day!

I love listening to my children role play. It gives a special insight into their thinkings.
