Dinosaur Skeleton Project

If you’ve been reading this blog at all you probably realize my 4 year old child’s big interests are dinosaurs and science experiments! Cutie Pie received a few dinosaur skeleton kits for Christmas and spent a little time with Daddy putting them together!

We didn’t realize when we got these for him just how complicated they would be to complete! The pic above shows Daddy doing all the work and Cutie Pie enjoying his hot cocoa, trying very hard to be a patient boy because a 4 year old just doesn’t have the fine motor skills to put a wood dinosaur skeleton together. He understood from the moment the first package was opened that these would be something for his room and not something he’d get to play with, but he was very excited about that because then his room “would be like a museum!” He now has a triceratops and T-rex on his dresser watching over him at night and a pteranadon flying over his head protecting him!

I ended up staying up late gluing all the pieces together, but throughout the process Cutie Pie did learn a little. He learned that putting models together takes a careful hand, that a plan makes the process easier, that having a ‘map’ and visual is a great help and that spilling hot cocoa on them would be a frustration! He saw how counting items could be very helpful when there are similar shapes and sizes to keep track of.

We saw his excitement in our spending time with him doing something he loves, and how spending time doing something he is very interested in with him, even when it is too difficult for him to do or help with, can show him how much we love him! We are definitely thinking our budding paleontologist might be one of those little ones who needs not only quality time together, but quantity time!

A "museum collection" is such a cute idea. We've put some of these wooden kits together and they can be tricky for little (and big) hands.
